Recently, I had the opportunity to collaborate on a project for a client based in Manchester, with the filming taking place in London. This opportunity came through a referral from another company that recognized my technical skills and needed a gaffer for their production.
Role and Responsibilities
In this project, I served as the Assistant to the Director, focusing on the critical aspects of setting up the technical environment:
Lighting: I was responsible for configuring the lighting setup, including backlighting and foreground lighting, to create the desired ambiance and visual effect.
Audio and Visual Equipment: I managed the setup of all microphones and cameras, ensuring optimal placement and functionality. This particular setup involved four Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K units.
Camera Calibration: My tasks included standardizing the settings across all cameras, such as ISO, color temperature, lens adjustments, resolution, and tripod height. This ensured consistency and quality in the footage captured from multiple angles.
The director made slight adjustments to the setup to align with his vision, and he was ultimately pleased with the results. Although I was primarily involved in the setup phase and provided some of the necessary equipment, the editing and final production were handled by the other company.
"Tabled" is a heartfelt podcast that delves into the trauma and challenges faced when experiencing the loss of a child at birth or during pregnancy. This sensitive and important topic is navigated with care and professionalism by our dedicated team.
Behind the Scenes
As the producer of "Tabled," my role is multifaceted, ensuring that each episode is seamlessly brought to life. I manage the technical aspects including cameras, lighting, and sound, allowing our three expert hosts to focus on sharing their invaluable insights and personal experiences.
Technical Expertise: My primary responsibility is to create a professional and polished final product. During live recordings, I focus on adjusting microphone levels and camera angles to ensure the highest quality audio and visual experience.
Post-Production: After the live session, I handle all post-production tasks. This includes editing the footage, correcting any content that may be unsuitable for online publication, and adding any necessary on-screen elements. This meticulous process guarantees a smooth and respectful presentation of such a delicate subject.

Producing "Tabled" requires a deep level of trust with the crew. While I am not actively listening to the conversation, my role is crucial in maintaining the technical integrity of the podcast. This trust is built on my commitment to managing the content responsibly, ensuring that the final product is both respectful and informative.
